Advances in Abrasives Technology is the eighth publication in a series that began in 1997 from the annual meetings organized by the International Committee for Abrasive Technology(ICAT), the Japan Society for Abrasive Technology,and other cooperating organizations. The 2006 meeting was held in Dalian University with the help of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society and Dalian University of Technology, China. This 806-page volume containing 129 technical papers selected from the 297 presentations with papers. Topics include grinding, polishing, lapping, honing and finishing technologies, novel techniques as well as dressing and truing for grinding processes, and abrasive technologies such as abrasive jet processing. The focus is upon precision manufacturing such as nano-processing of brittle materials, precision measurement and evaluation of high precision components, micro-fabrication, and advanced machining technologies.
The papers show several important facets of contemporary abrasive technology. First they show the ever widening range of applications for abrasives and the trend towards precision at levels of control not attainable a decade ago. Second they show the sophistication of research by Asian countries and the work in those regions that is breaking important new ground in uses of abrasives. No longer is manufacturing in the Far East conducted using technology borrowed from Western countries. The papers also illustrate how manufacturers in that region of the world are emphacizing applications for advanced materials, setting the stage for them to become leaders in the technology in coming decades.
