EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES IN ABRASIVE TECHNOLOGY

Note:this page designed for small type fonts A goal for Abrasive Engineering Society is to provide guidance in training programs and educational resources related to grinding technology available not only through AES but many other trade and professional organizations. Following are general comments about finding training programs and resources. If you know of resources not incluced, send us an e-mail message and we will add listings as soon as we get them.

GENERAL NOTES

Unfortunately, there isn't a single source for training in abrasives technology due in part to the wide diversity of applications for abrasives. Most programs are unpublicized and focus on a specific type of application, such as honing, or lapping, or a type of product such as grinding wheel, or coated abrasive. Many are considered value-added services of a manufacturer. Examples include the program and textbook on abrasives used for rebuilding automotive engines offered by Sunnen Corporation. Saint Gobain (Norton Company) has a highly successful program conducted at the facilities of the Higgins Grinding Center in Worcester, MA. Programs at Saint Gobain are announced and scheduled through regional sales personnel.

CUSTOM PROGRAMS

Custom training program are available from several consultants who will conduct training onsite and trailor sessions to the needs and interests of a specific audience. Examples include those by Dr. Richard Lindsay, Dr. Stephen Malkin(University of MA-Amherst) or Cornelius Smits (TechSolve), Dr. Stuart Salmon (Advance Manufacturing Technology). E-mail AES for specific contact information

  •   The Society of Manufacturing Engineers offer several program includes annual conference on Buff, Brush and Polish; Honing, and Grinding Conferences. In addition SME offers clinic and seminars held coincident with major trade such as WESTEC or AMT's International Machine Tools Show. Noteworthy is:
  • Precision Grinding and Abrasive Machining Certificate Program supercedes SME’s Modern Grinding Workshop conducted by Dr. Stuart Salmon. The class typically include a copy of Dr. Salmon's Modern Grinding Process Technology, which is also available through AES; next scheduled program: September 22-24, 2003 contact Lynn Walsh SME. (1-313-271-1500)
  •   The Superabrasives Engineering Certificate Course is offered at the University of Toledo and conducted by Dr. Marinescu of the Abrasive Micromachining Center. The certificate reflects successful completion of exams that are part of the rigorous course, which is geared to the interests of engineers. Scheduling for varies with demand.
A programs focused on superabrasives include a new certification program currently under development by the Industrial Diamond Association in cooperation with TechSolve.

    TOPICAL SUBJECTS

For topics closer to the pure sciences, material sciences, tribology, surface technology, etc., there are a wide variety of choices. The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineershas a certification program for metalworking fluids technologies. The orgranization also has a several committees that present technical papers related to metalworking fluids and grinding each year. The ASM also has a number of papers scattered among its technical sessions on materials. Similarly the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Ceramic Society, and the American Society of Precision Engineer, hold annual conferences in which abrasive technology is covered in one or more technical session.

    PUBLISHED RESOURCES

AES acts as an agent to hundreds of teaching resources that includes textbooks, teachers manuals, training and safety videos, computer-based learning packages, and safety standards published by major publication houses. Publications include not only introductory publications like Precision Grinding by Dr.V. Repp but books on related subjects such as mathematics for machinists, CNC programming or machine tool design. AES works hard to provide such textbooks at competitive market prices with discount for quantity.
